The municipal elections in Hong Kong take place without serious incidents and with a high level of participation, in elections in which 1,090 candidates are measured to compete for 452 councilor positions in the 18 districts that make up the island.
A total of 4.1 million people are registered to vote this Sunday, more than half of the population of 7.3 million citizens, and participation is expected to exceed 47% in 2015, says Telesur.
"So far the elections have taken place in a relatively calm and peaceful environment," said Chief Executive Carrie Lam after voting in her constituency on the island of Hong Kong.
Both the chief executive of the territory and other members of the Government and candidates called on the population to participate in the democratic exercise in a peaceful and civilized way, to leave behind violent episodes that keep socio-economic life under tension.
The demonstrations began last June 9 in rejection of a bill that would allow extraditions to China, which was withdrawn in September, but mobilizations continued in the Chinese territory, which retains a special status that gives it semi-autonomy.
